Culture ships pitted one against another and the most fun aliens you will ever meet The Affront. Very funny

I have read all the novels of Iain M Banks and I read Excession first in the year it was published in paperback in 1997, and I have reread this book several times since.
This is a Culture book, for those of you who may not be familiar with Iain M Banks, he created a great civilisation called The Culture. And though he never set put to write a Trilogy or a series, the universe he created was so popular he returned to it again and again. The full list counts ten titles: Consider Phlebas, 1987; The Player of Games,1988; Use of Weapons, 1990; The State of the Art, 1991; Excession, 1996; Inversions, 1998; Look to Windward,2000; Matter,2008; Surface Detail, 2010; The Hydrogen Sonata, 2012.
So Excession is #5 in the series. This is a fun book. This is a lot less dark than say Use of Weapons and certainly there is no tragedy as in Look to Windward. What we have is a straight forward adventure Genar-Hofoen who lives with the Affront and aggressive expanding civilisation and their bid to claim a space artifact called the Excession. This puts them in conflict with a number of AI or giant Artificial Intelligence machines called Minds who also want to have this artifact.
There's a lot of machine talk, space ships with outrageous names, and some seriously fun sports and outlandish games provided by the Affront which have all the entertainment value and high spirits as a bunch of battle-weary dwarfs on an extended stag night.
This one will make you smile, particularly the ending. Genar-Hofoen has a nice problem to solve. If you could have anything you wished for? What would it be?

A stunning, visionary masterpiece by one of the great SF authors of the dawn of the 21st century.

Iain wrote both general fiction (as Iain Banks) and SF (as Iain M. Banks). He publicly stated, before his death, that he wrote general fiction to fund his SF writing, and that SF is the only genre of fiction that actually matters, because it is the only genre that speculates about problems we might encounter in the future and tries to devise solutions to them before we encounter them.
Most, though not all, of his SF is written in the Culture milieu. The Culture is an extremely advanced post-scarcity galactic society in which most of the hard decisions of running the society are made by hyper-intelligent, self-aware starship Minds. Many of the ship Minds are as interesting characters as the people are. It is a vastly imaginative, enormously rich setting, covering expanses of space and time possibly second only to Steven Baxter and Olaf Stapledon, though with much more human and sympathetic characters than Baxter (and without Baxter's tendency to "everyone dies happily ever after" endings).
In my opinion, Excession is the best introduction to the Culture, and the best place to start reading Iain M. Banks' SF works, even though it is not chronologically the earliest. My suggested reading order would be Excession, then Consider Phlebas, followed in pretty much any order by Look to Windward, Matter, Surface Detail, and The Player of Games. Use of Weapons and The State of the Art are side threads that can go into the list at any point, and The Algebraist, while technically not a Culture novel, is not incompatible with it. And you should finish up with The Hydrogen Sonata, the last Culture book Iain completed before his death, because ... well, by then, you'll understand why.
It is an incredibly bitter irony that Iain's final book (which was general fiction) was about a man dealing with the discovery that he has terminal cancer and has only a few months to live, and that a few months before completing the book, he discovered that he himself had terminal cancer and had only months to live. But those of us who know and love his Culture novels will forever believe that Iain M. Banks did not die. He sublimed.
By the time you reach The Hydrogen Sonata, you'll understand that statement.

A confusing space opera that will leave readers scratching their heads

Plunging into Iain M. Banks’ ‘Excession’ may leave many readers cold. The book stars with Dajeil Gelian, held within an enormous starship ‘Sleeper Service’, which supposedly went rogue from the Culture, an advanced society controlled by all too-human starship Minds. They exists in an uneasy truce with an alien Affronter empire. The Elench are human, coexisting with the Culture. What triggers the sudden scrambling by everyone is the emergence of an alien sphere, supposedly coming from a different universe that potentially opens opportunities for those able to control it. The starship ‘Sleeper Service’ heads for this mysterious object to save everybody from themselves.
I found this book whimsical, satirical, and often highly convoluted and confusing. Iain M. Banks throws into the mix ship Minds that are more human than the humans, with exaggerated human failings, something I found difficult to swallow for entities supposedly guiding humanity’s Culture. Throw in starship names like ‘Problem Child’, ‘Peace Makes Plenty’ and ‘Shoot them Later’, left me bemused. The underlying theme of the book is nothing more than a superficial tale of a frustrated romance between Dajeil Gelian and Byr Genar-Hofoen, and the Mind running ‘Sleeper Service’ who attempts to bring them together. I did not find anything brilliant in this novel.
