Enjoyable and “true” fantasy-fulfilling read

The synopsis claims this novel to demonstrate how Mistress Benay has turned her husband into her slave. It does a little bit of that but the bulk of the novel concentrates in describing some of the most significant sessions she has had with him at the start of their relationship. Though the sessions were fun to read, the in between of them lacked of substance and purpose. It would have been beneficial, had she had filled up these gaps with Mistress‘ motivations, thoughts and background details, so as to develop depthness of characters.

It reads as a work of fiction, meaning it does what I expected it to do ; sexually arouse me and vicariously satisfy some of my darkest and most abject fantasies. It was good in that manner, on the other hand, it was quite far from being a literary masterpiece, for its dryly descriptive and flavorless prose as oppose to being agreeable and insightful.

On a positive note, the plot flows at the right pace. There were no boring moments, the slave‘s predicaments gets progressively worse as time goes by, as one would expect of a typical femdom novel.

Very interesting

At Her Beck and Call was a very interesting book. I will say it wasn't exactly what I was expecting form the synopsis though. The description seems to promise a tale of the journey a Dom takes to mold their sub, the book does this a little bit. However it seems to focus more on what this particular Domme believes to have been significant scenes for her and her sub. Despite this slight let down I really enjoyed the book.
Mistress Benay is very candid about the moments she shared with her sub. This helps to feel like the source is really authentic and it's not a made up story (which of course it isn't). The stories and advice she shares are helpful and interesting. I do wish she shared more in depth thought about why she is drawn to it or what she was feeling during these times. The lacking of this doesn't really detract from the book, however.
I truly enjoyed the read. If nothing else it is a good book to fuel a few fantasies. If you are interested in learning more about BDSM or just toying with the fantasy of it, this book will definitely suit your needs. Give it a try!

At Her Beck and Call (Female Domination Series) by Mistress Benay is a one hundred and forty page journal of a female dominatrix. Her slave husband, Troy, has put all her thoughts and events together for the book. This is not really a fiction story, like Fifty Shades of Grey, but a real life account of how Mistress Benay first became a dominatrix to Troy.

It is mostly her narration and thoughts on different situations as she teaches Troy male servitude, not a lot of dialogue from Troy. In fact we do not know much about Troy, however this is not a story, more of a how to guide for woman. The author even suggests that if you are a man reading the journal to pass it over to your female counterpart. The chronicles begin with her life/day job being a dominatrix but her wanting more of a steady slave/husband and how she accomplished that.

Georges Albert Maurice Victor Bataille (1897–1962) was a French philosopher, novelist, and literary critic (and a librarian by profession); he wrote many books, including The Accursed Share: an Essay on General Economy, Vol. 1: Consumption, The Accursed Share, Vols. 2 and 3: The History of Eroticism and Sovereignty, On Nietzsche, Visions Of Excess: Selected Writings, 1927-1939, The Impossible, etc.

The Introduction by J.M. Lo Duca states, “It was on the 24th of July, 1959, that Bataille decided upon the title of this book: ‘The Tears of Eros’ … The idea of ‘The Tears of Eros’ never left him, and he planned it down to the most minute detail, from the economy of the chapters to the cropping of the photographs… and including a very elaborate selection of images from the prehistoric era, the Ecole de Fontatinbleau, and from the Surrealists, both avowed and clandestine. For two years, from July 1959 to April 1961, he elaborated the layout of this work, which increasingly took on the proportions of a conclusion to all the themes he had loved. Putting it together, however, was slow, and ‘The Tears of Eros’ was held up both by circumstance … and by the decline of his physical strength… The book was finished… and he was happy with it; it was a unified whole, from the choice of the typeface to the rhythm of the page layouts; he had taken care that his ideas were neither slowed down, nor impeded, nor betrayed by a misplaced image.”

Bataille wrote, “In considering eroticism, the human mind is faced with its most fundamental difficulty. Eroticism, in a sense, is laughable… Allusion to the erotic is always capable of arousing irony. Even in speaking of the TEARS of Eros, I could give in to laughter… Eros is nonetheless tragic. Above all, Eros if the tragic god.” (Pg. 66)

He continues, “At this point, I would like to explain the religious meaning of eroticism. The meaning of eroticism escapes anyone who cannot see its RELIGIOUS meaning. Reciprocally, the meaning of religion in its totality escapes anyone who disregards the link it has with eroticism.” (Pg. 70)

He argues, “In the history of eroticism, the Christian religion had this role: to condemn it. To the extent that Christianity ruled the world, it attempted to liberate if from eroticism. But if we want to come to a conclusion about the consequences of this, we are obviously in a predicament. Christianity was, in a sense, favorable to the world or work. It valorized work at the expense of sensual pleasure. Of course, it turned paradise into the world of immediate---as well as eternal---satisfaction. But first it made paradise the outcome of an effort, the outcome of labor. In a sense, Christianity is a link that made the outcome of labor---the labor, primarily, of the ancient world---the prelude of a world of work.” (Pg. 79)

He states, “I write these desolate phrases in a state of mind quite the opposite of the delicious sangfroid that the name Erzsébet Báthory calls up. It is not a question of remorse, nor of a rage of desire as it was in Sade’s mind. It concerns opening consciousness to the representation of what man really is. Faced with this representation, Christianity went into hiding. Beyond doubt, mankind as a whole must forever remain in hiding, but human consciousness---in pride and humility, with passion and in trembling---must be open to the zenith of horror. Although Sade can be read with ease today, it has not changed the number of crimes---even sadistic crimes---but it fully opens human nature to a consciousness of itself.” (Pg. 140)

The essence of bullshit is not that it is FALSE but that it is PHONY.

Someone who lies and someone who tells the truth are playing on opposite sides, so to speak, in the same game. Each responds to the facts as he understand them, although the response of the one is guided by the authority of truth, while the response of the other defies that authority and refuses to meet its demands. The bulls***ter ignores these demands altogether. He does not reject the authority of the truth, as the liar does, and opposes himself to it at all. He pays no attention to it at all. By virtue of this, bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are.

Frankfurt starts strong: "One of the most salient features of our culture is that there is so much BS. Laugh aloud in the beginning but wait for it. Then he goes about defining a theoretical understanding of BS. Really? S#IT is a powerful word but BS is less insulting than a LIE. The source might be cheerful ignorance but to lie you need to know the truth. Can we know the TRUTH? Here comes a punch: "Our nature is elusively insubstantial… sincerity itself is BS". I’m crying here :-)

Difficult to Follow

Muybridges momumental work photographing animals in all different gates and poses and tests of ability. Using sometimes up to 100 cameras for a single set up to gain what is now the definitive guide for animators in understanding the motion of animals. It all started with a $25,000 bet: Eadweard Muybridge and a friend argued whether all four of the horses hooves leave the ground completely at any point during a gallop. Being funded for the project, Muybridge proved to be the winner in saying that horses do in fact leave the ground for a momentary second in their strides. The book begins with an anlaysis of locomotion, going over the walk, the amble, the trot, the rack (or pace), the canter, the transverse-gallop, the rotary-gallop, and the richochet, along with the leap and buck and kick. There are roughly 4,000 photos in this collection which claims to be the largest collection of animals in motion. It features not only horses but lions, deers, oxen, elephants, birds and kangaroos. From this development, Muybridge not only discovered that horses gallop with no feet touching the ground, but his discovery led to motion pictures, in which his photos is a very crude version of cinema today. Later he designed a viewer called a Zoogyroscope (or Zoopraxiscope) which, similar to a Zoetrope, was a carousel with slits which you look through while it is spinning to give the illusion of motion (or persistence of vision). Today these pictures are looked at for a couple of reasons, mostly as nastolgia for one to have wonder and excitement of this simple cinema, but it also is a great reference for modern animators. Reduced Clarity in Some Photos (not a Hinderance), but Still a Wonderfully Useful Book

The book is very useful. Its thoroughness of animals featured is commendable and outstanding. However, in some of the frames, the animals' details are difficult to see. But, then again, the book was originally published in 1957. I'm guessing not all photography was excellent quality back then. Of course, the book's purpose is as a reference guide to help someone authenticate their artistic representations of animals in motion. Therefore, the owner and user of this book wouldn't need to see details on the animal photos, just the form.

Its Not Just For Animators

The images of the dray horses pulling heavy loads is worth the price of admission for me. This is a great reference for artists who want to create realistic images of animals in motion. It's a fabulous settler of bar room bets. It's a source of animated gifs for web designers (I have the running cat image that's been going around.)
For people who want to understand animals in general, this is a good reference. I never thought that all the ways an animal can go from point A to point B each had a name to it and that a quadruped can have so many ways to move.
Its an interesting historical piece, too. People do not see horses doing useful work any more and it's a reminder that we all had a life before internal combustion. Its an interesting chapter in the history of photography and the history of art, too. (Painting was never the same after people figured out how animals really moved.)
