This was ok for suspense, but it just didn't excite me. Things felt superficial.

AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR PROBLEM:
I wanted to buy the audiobook but I did not, because I could hear the narrator's BREATHS. The narrator Romy Nordlinger needs to use a different microphone, or do something in the editing process to remove her breathing.
THE KINDLE BOOK:
The main weakness was not enough showing how things got done or how knowledge was obtained. I didn't know enough about the bad guys - why they kidnapped, how they kidnapped, what they did with victims, how victims were released and saved. I also wanted to know more about the good guys - Cole and others in the Association. The main story is between the couple and their conversations together and not enough about things outside the main couple. She breaks into a building. He catches her and then they both do it again together. So the main suspense is the risk of getting caught and then escaping. Everything else is background. I think character development was a little wooden. She had some issues I did not understand. He is supposed to be a math genius who does things with formulas and probabilities, but I didn't see anything done with that skill. That would have been interesting.

Perfect blend of romance and suspense!

Against the Dark is a fantastic romantic suspense. It's definitely one of the best in the genre I've read in a while. Angel is a former safe-cracker with a very special skill. She was once an apprentice for one of the greatest safe-crackers. Five years ago she pulled out of the jewel heist business because she realized she was hurting real people. Ever since then she's been living the straight and narrow with a very successful design business. Unfortunately, the aunt of one of her former crew members gets kidnapped. The kidnappers are the Flesh Boys, and they want Angel and her friends to steal diamonds from this really bad guy, Walter Borgola. And it has to be these specific diamonds because they want to embarrass Borgola. Angel is one of the few people on the planet who can crack a Fenton Furst safe and even though she left her life of crime behind the woman who's been kidnapped was like a second mother to her growing up. So she's in.
As the story starts Angel and her crew are at a party at Borgola's mansion and she spots this guy who she thinks is part of Borgola's security. Which introduces us to Cole. Oh my, he is such a sexy hero I don't even know where to start. Just like Angel, Cole isn't what he seems either. He's an agent working for the shadowy `Association'.
What I really liked about this story is how perfect Angel and Cole are for each other. They're both not what they seem, they're both really loyal and they're a little broken. But for different reasons. Where Angel had loving parents growing up, she was also dirt poor and fell in with a crowd that led her to a life of crime. And Cole had drug addicted parents whose overdosing ended up being the best thing that happened to him. The suspense was great in this book because the villain is really bad and the stakes were high. The romance was equally high, which made for a perfect blend. For a while Cole really fought his feelings for Angel and it was sweet to watch him realize what he'd be willing to give up for her. And the same goes for Angel; watching her fall for Cole was incredibly sweet. She's a really strong character but she also has emotional flaws and a streak of vulnerability that made her so likeable. It was easy to see why Cole fell for her.
Action-packed with the perfect blend of romance, I highly recommend this book and can't wait for the next book in what promises to be an incredible series.

Great start to a new series!

I had never read a book by Carolyn Crane before. On the recommendation of a good friend; I entered a contest and won an ARC of Against the Dark. The positives were the characters, who were well developed and likeable despite, or maybe because of, their rough edges. The heroine was strong but maintained a believable amount of insecurity and vulnerability. The hero was tough but brainy and I have to say I LOVED that he wore glasses! The pacing was good and there was a fair amount of tension.
On the minus side, I got off to a rocky start reading when I got to the scene in the tunnels with the Angel and her friends (I personally don't go for women calling each other "bitches" and I thought the lipstick thing was a little lame), however once I got past that I was drawn into the story. Also, I thought the mole thing was a bit thrown in there as a plot point but not fleshed out at all.
As a whole though, I enjoyed the book and will happily pick up the sequel!
