IS THERE A "GAY STRANGLEHOLD" ON CATHOLIC SEMINARIES?
By Steven H Propp
Michael S. Rose is editor of St. Catherine Review, and has also written Priest: Portraits of Ten Good Men Serving the Church Today and Striving to Serve Him Faithfully, The Renovation Manipulation: The Church Counter-Renovation Handbook, and Ugly As Sin: Why They Changed Our Churches from Sacred Places to Meeting Spaces and How We Can Change Them Back Again. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 276-jpage hardcover edition.]
He wrote in the Introduction to this 2002 book, "In the months before this book went to press, Catholics throughout the United States were scandalized by one revelation after another about sexual abuse among the Catholic clergy... The big question now: Why is this happening?... I researched and wrote this book over the past two years... Although I did not set out to write a book about clerical sex abuse, what I discovered provides at least part of the answer to the burning question: How could this have happened? Goodbye, Good Man presents documented evidence that the root of this problem... extends down to the very place where vocations to the priesthood germinate: the seminary. Too often men who support the teachings of the Church... on sexual morality, are dismissed for being 'rigid'... while those seminarians who ... 'come out' as gays ... are given preferential treatment and then ordained to the Catholic priesthood... gross sexual immorality and the protective network formed around that immorality is only one of the major issues that needs to be forthrightly addressed by the shepherds of the Catholic Church." (Pg. ix-xi)
Rose says, "From my own research, it appears that, although there is a very serious problem among seminaries that cater primarily to those training for the diocesan priesthood, the homosexual problem is deeper and more pervasive among the religious orders." (Pg. 82)
He also notes (second-hand, it should be observed) "one particularly notable case of sexual harassment... He took academic classes at the seminary and received his formation at the religious house. When he got into seminary... he was constantly accosted by homosexual superiors. Although a homosexual himself, [he] wanted to be chaste." (Pg. 80-81) Another told him that when he was a 14-year old minor seminarian, "Sometimes I'd get a knock on the door of my room late at night, and one of the upperclassmen would slide a copy of Playboy under my door. This was the common way to circulate these magazines, but I would slide it right back out. A few days later one of my high school teachers, a priest... [told] me that fourteen-year-old boys shouldn't be praying in Latin and reading the Code of Canon Law. He told me that I ought to be 'reading' Playboys like the other guys. I was aghast." (Pg. 161)
He suggests, "many, many vocations were destroyed through the undermining of chastity. Once desensitized in sex workshops or by poring through sexually explicit material in seminary textbooks, the prospect of dating and carrying on a straightforward sexual relationship with a woman (as opposed to a perverted sexual relationship) probably struck many seminarians as rather reasonable. Be that as it may, the saints have repeatedly taught that it is difficult to remain faithful to the Church if one cannot remain chaste." (Pg. 205)
He was told by some orthodox seminarians that "there does exist an 'underground network' of orthodox seminarians.... but they keep their prayer life and spiritual direction with orthodox priests in strict confidence... 'students who are loyal to Church teaching and oppose the gay stranglehold on the seminary trade notes, conference tapes, and spiritual reading... without it, very few of us would survive... there are some "closet-orthodox" members of the faculty who try to offer the truth, although they must often do so surreptitiously.'" (Pg. 61)
This is definitely a provocative and thought-provoking book, which will interest most readers with an interest in Catholic issues. While one may quibble about Rose's research and large reliance on testimonials, his book is challenging reading for persons on all sides of the issues he raises.

The truth behind the sex abuse scandal
By James Glaeg
Casting Norma Jeane: A Starlet is Transformed Into Marilyn MonroeI eagerly devoured this book. As a former seminarian who attended seminary in the Midwest during the height of the period Michael Rose covers, I can endorse this book as accurate to an uncanny degree. And I will say that I myself never tired of the author's very extensive use of first-person testimonials. To read these was to relive one of the most horrific experiences of my lifetime. Not that there wasn't much to be gained during the two years I spent at my particular seminary -- in lifelong friends made, in wonderful academic opportunities afforded me, but above all in having my eyes opened to the actual causes for the sex abuse scandals that were soon to envelop the Church. One thing I did feel was missing here was a full account of the all-important network of seminary admissions and priestly formation ideologues who were behind this nationwide collapse in standards. How, when, and where did they get organized in the first place? How openly did they communicate? etc, etc. But in any case, make no mistake about it. Moral collapse at the seminaries was the principal cause of the sex abuse crisis. What insider could not have seen it coming? I did. And I found it a marvel, even then, that the bishops ultimately responsible for this colossal tragedy didn't see it coming too.

Absolutely Captivating!
By C. John
Wow. What a great book! I could not put it down. What a page turner! This is a book that every Catholic needs to read. The conservative Catholics will be shocked and saddened that this disease infected the Catholic church. The liberal Catholics will cheer because this disease infected the Catholic church. I am the former. This book was published in 2002 and I hope in the 14 years that have transpired since then, that this infection has been eradicated from the American seminaries and that traditional Catholic values are now being taught to new seminarians. Mr. Rose did an excellent job of research and the way in which he presented the facts was concise, easy to get a grip on and as I said in the beginning of this review, I could not put the book down. I have since passed it on to others to read. When you read this book, prepare to be shocked at what the liberals tried to do to this miracle called the Catholic church and what, I am sure, they will continue to try to do. Hopefully, reading this book will also make you very angry and want to fight even harder to protect and preserve the faith. Thank you, Michael Rose!
